PTFE Sheet vs PTFE Coated Fibreglass Fabric

Both products are PTFE, and buyers regularly ask for one when they need the other. The difference is structural: PTFE sheet is solid material you machine, cut or clamp; PTFE coated fabric is a glass cloth carrier with a PTFE skin, and it is flexible. That difference decides nearly every application.

Quick comparison

PTFE sheet PTFE coated fibreglass fabric
Form Solid PTFE, by thickness Woven glass cloth with a PTFE coating
Behaviour Rigid to semi-rigid; cold-flows under sustained load Flexible, drapes, takes repeated movement
Specified for Gaskets, seals, slide pads, machined parts, linings Release sheets, heat sealing, conveyor belting, splash curtains
Not for Anything that must flex repeatedly Anything needing thickness, machining or bolt load

PTFE sheet

PTFE sheet is chosen when you need PTFE’s chemical resistance in a part that has thickness and holds a shape — cut gaskets, slide and wear pads, chute linings, machined components. It carries PTFE’s near-universal chemical inertness and very low friction.

Its known weakness is cold flow: under sustained compressive load PTFE creeps, so a bolted gasket can lose clamping force over time. That is normal behaviour and designed around, usually with correct bolt load and re-torque, or by moving to a filled grade.

PTFE coated fibreglass fabric

PTFE coated fibreglass fabric puts the same surface chemistry on a flexible carrier. The glass cloth supplies tensile strength and dimensional stability; the PTFE supplies release and chemical resistance. It handles repeated flexing, which solid sheet does not, and it is thin — so it belongs where you need a surface rather than a body of material: release sheeting, heat-sealing bars, conveyor belting, splash and separation curtains.

How to choose

  • Does the part need thickness or machining? Sheet.
  • Does it need to flex, drape or wrap? Coated fabric.
  • Is it a bolted joint? Sheet — and plan for cold flow.
  • Is the requirement a non-stick surface on something else? Coated fabric.

If you are weighing PTFE against other plastics for a machined part, the PTFE rod vs POM vs nylon comparison covers that choice, and the chemical compatibility chart confirms the chemistry.

Indicative guidance only. Thickness, coating weight and temperature ratings vary by grade; confirm against the datasheet for the material we quote before specifying from it.
