Chemical-Resistant Sealing: Selecting PTFE Components and Gland Packing for Corrosive Process Plants

In a chemical plant, the process fluid itself is often the biggest threat to a seal’s survival, not temperature or pressure alone. A gasket or packing that performs perfectly on water or oil can fail within days on an acid or solvent line if the base material isn’t chemically compatible — and by the time a leak is visible, product has usually already been lost or contaminated.
Why PTFE is the default for aggressive chemical service
PTFE is close to chemically inert across the full pH range, resisting acids, alkalis and solvents that degrade rubber, most plastics and even some metals over time. That’s why PTFE Rods and PTFE Sheets are machined into seals, bushes and linings specifically for aggressive-media contact, operating from about -180°C to +260°C without the material itself becoming the point of failure.
Sealing pump and valve shafts on corrosive lines
Pure PTFE Gland Packing is braided from 100% PTFE yarn, giving a clean, non-contaminating seal that resists the full pH 0–14 range — the standard choice for pumps and valves handling acids, caustics and solvents where a metal-contaminated or degraded packing would be unacceptable. Food and FDA-compliant white PTFE grades extend the same chemistry to product-contact applications within a chemical plant’s downstream processing.
Flange and vessel gaskets on irregular or glass-lined joints
Glass-lined reactors and vessels present a specific sealing problem: the flange face often isn’t perfectly flat, and a rigid cut gasket can crack the glass lining or fail to seal evenly. PTFE Joint Sealant is an expanded-PTFE cord with a self-adhesive backing that conforms in place to irregular or glass-lined flange surfaces — solving exactly this problem without the risk a rigid gasket carries on delicate linings.
For standard flange joints elsewhere in the plant, Non-Asbestos Jointing Sheet covers general chemical, oil and steam duty up to around 200–210°C.
Filtration in corrosive process streams
Chemical plants filter everything from catalyst fines to reaction by-products, often in the same corrosive media the seals must resist. Rotary Filter Cloth is selected specifically to match the slurry chemistry and particle size of the process rather than a generic weave, and Polyester Wadding Filter handles coarser air and pre-filtration duty around the plant.
Where silicone rubber still has a role
Not every seal in a chemical plant needs full PTFE chemistry — Silicone Rubber Sheet remains a strong, lower-cost choice for high-heat gaskets and oven or autoclave seals where the media is not aggressively corrosive but the temperature (up to around 230°C continuous) rules out ordinary rubber.
A simple selection framework
| Situation | Recommended product |
|---|---|
| Pump/valve shaft on acid or caustic line | Pure PTFE Gland Packing |
| Glass-lined vessel or irregular flange | PTFE Joint Sealant |
| Machined seal, bush or liner in aggressive media | PTFE Rods / PTFE Sheets |
| Standard flange, non-aggressive media | Non-Asbestos Jointing Sheet |
| High-heat, non-corrosive gasket | Silicone Rubber Sheet |
Frequently asked questions
Is PTFE compatible with essentially any chemical we’ll encounter? It’s close to universally inert, but a handful of exotic media (molten alkali metals, certain fluorinating agents) can still attack it — worth confirming for genuinely unusual process chemistry.
Why not just use PTFE joint sealant on every flange instead of cut gaskets? Cut gaskets are usually more cost-effective and just as reliable on standard flat flanges; the cord is worth its higher cost specifically where the flange face is irregular or delicate.
Can food-grade PTFE packing be used on non-food chemical lines too? Yes — it performs identically from a chemical-resistance standpoint; the food-grade certification simply adds traceability, not different chemistry.
