Selecting gland packing isn’t just about the cross-section that fits your stuffing box — pressure, shaft speed, and the fluid being sealed all change which material and braid style will actually last.

Start with the operating conditions

Before picking a material, write down your maximum pressure, temperature range, and shaft surface speed. These three numbers rule out most of the wrong options immediately.

Matching material to service

PTFE-based packing handles a wide chemical range and low friction; graphite grades suit high-temperature and high-pressure steam service; aramid reinforcement adds strength for abrasive slurries.
