PTFE Thread Seal Tape

Thread seal tape is a PTFE film tape commonly used in plumbing for sealing pipe threads.Thread seal tape lubrication allows for a deeper seating of the threads and it helps prevent the threads from seizing when being unscrewed. The tape also works as a deformable filler and thread lubricant helping to seal the joint without hardening or making it more difficult to tighten and instead making it easier to tighten. It is commonly used commercially in applications including pressurized water systems,Central heating systems and air compression equipment.

  • Seals threaded pipe joints against pressure — the plumber's standard
  • Lubricates the thread so it seats deeper & tightens easier
  • Prevents thread galling & seizing on assembly and removal
  • Inert PTFE — safe on water, heating, gas & compressed air

Overview

PTFE thread seal tape — the familiar white "plumber's tape" — is a thin film of pure PTFE wound onto threaded pipe fittings to seal the joint. It works as a deformable filler: as the two threads are tightened, the tape is squeezed into the tiny helical gap between them, blocking the leak path that a bare metal thread always leaves. Because PTFE is chemically inert and has the lowest friction of any solid, the same tape that seals the joint also lubricates it.

That lubrication is the half of the job people forget. The tape lets the threads seat more deeply and tighten more smoothly, which both improves the seal and — crucially — stops the threads galling and seizing. A tapered metal-to-metal thread run in dry can pick up and lock; the same thread with PTFE tape comes apart cleanly months or years later. It does this without hardening or setting, so it never makes the joint harder to undo the way some pastes do.

It is used anywhere a threaded connection has to hold pressure without leaking: pressurised water systems, central heating and hot-water pipework, and compressed-air equipment. It suits both metal and plastic threads. The one rule that matters is direction — the tape must be wrapped the same way the fitting screws on, or tightening simply unwinds it.

Note that thread seal tape is a completely different product from heat-barrier glass tape: one seals threads against pressure, the other insulates hot pipes. If you are sealing a threaded joint, PTFE thread seal tape is what you want. We supply it in the common widths and densities — tell us the thread size and duty.

Applications

Wherever a threaded connection has to hold pressure and come apart again cleanly.

Pressurised Water Systems Sealing threaded fittings, valves and connections on mains and pressurised water pipework so joints do not weep under pressure.
Central Heating & Hot Water Radiator valves, pump unions and hot-water fittings, where the tape seals and also stops threads seizing at temperature so they can be serviced later.
Compressed Air Equipment Air-line fittings, couplings and pneumatic connections where a leaking thread is wasted energy and lost pressure.
General Plumbing & Maintenance The default sealant for threaded pipe joints across maintenance and installation work, on both metal and plastic threads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which way do I wrap the tape?

In the same direction the fitting screws on (clockwise, looking at the end of a standard right-hand thread). Wrap it the wrong way and tightening the joint just peels the tape off, so it does nothing. Three to five firm wraps into the thread is usually right.

Is PTFE thread tape the same as glass tape?

No. PTFE thread seal tape seals threaded joints against pressure. Glass tape is a heat barrier for wrapping hot pipes — it does nothing on a thread. They are completely different products.

Can I use it on gas fittings?

A high-density (often yellow) PTFE tape grade is made specifically for gas threads. Use the correct density grade for gas rather than standard water-grade tape, and follow local gas-fitting regulations.

Does it stop threads seizing?

Yes — that is one of its main benefits. PTFE is the lowest-friction solid there is, so the tape lubricates the thread and prevents the galling and seizing that lock dry metal threads together. The joint comes apart cleanly later.

How many wraps do I need?

Around 3–5 wraps for standard water threads, more turns for larger or gas threads. Enough to fill the thread without so much that the fitting will not seat. Pull it firmly so it beds into the thread form.

What temperature and chemicals can it handle?

PTFE is inert to virtually all chemicals and serves roughly −200°C to +260°C, so the tape itself is not the limiting factor — the pipe, fitting and system rating are.
