Operating conditions & why material choice matters

HVAC is where glass wool is most completely at home, because building services need exactly the two things it does at once. Ductwork must be insulated thermally, or conditioned air gains or loses heat on its way through the building. But ductwork is also a noise path — fan noise and airflow turbulence travel along it into occupied spaces — and glass wool’s open fibrous structure absorbs that sound as effectively as it resists heat transfer. One material, both problems.

Cold service introduces a failure mode that hot service does not, and it catches people out. Warm humid air drives moisture into insulation towards the cold surface, where it condenses. Wet glass wool insulates very poorly, and once it is wet it stays wet. A properly sealed vapour barrier on the warm side is therefore not an optional extra in chilled and cold applications — it is the difference between insulation that works and insulation that quietly fails within a season.

The other quiet killer is compression. It is the trapped still air, not the glass, that does the insulating. Insulation squashed at a joint, a support or behind tight cladding has lost the air and will leak both heat and sound at exactly that point — while looking perfectly installed.

A Leading Air Conditioning Manufacturer

Improving Air Containment at High-Traffic Production Doorways

Customer Problem

A leading air conditioning manufacturer was losing conditioned air through large production door openings. Every time a doorway stands open, conditioned air spills out and unconditioned air spills in, and the plant pays for it continuously — on a large opening in constant use, the loss is substantial and repeats all day.

Technical Investigation

The cause was operational rather than mechanical: frequent traffic prevented the doors from remaining closed. Forklifts, pallet trucks and personnel were passing through constantly, so the doors simply could not be kept shut without obstructing production. This is the contradiction at the heart of the problem — the doorway has to be open for the plant to work, and closed for the plant to hold its conditioned air.

Root Cause

The doorway needed to be simultaneously open for traffic and closed for air containment. A conventional door cannot resolve that, which is why the openings were being left open and the loss accepted.

Recommended Solution

We supplied and installed transparent PVC strip curtains. A strip curtain resolves the contradiction directly: vehicles and personnel push straight through without stopping, and the strips fall closed behind them, so the doorway is sealed the rest of the time. Because the strips are clear, visibility through the opening is maintained — which matters for safety where forklifts are approaching from both sides.

Installation Summary

Strip width and thickness were matched to the doorway size and traffic level, and the curtain was hung to clear the floor without dragging. The setting that most determines whether a curtain actually performs is overlap: too little overlap for the traffic level and most of the containment benefit is lost, which is the usual reason behind a complaint that a curtain “does not seem to be helping”.

Operational Result

Air separation at the openings was improved while visibility and free traffic flow through the doorways were maintained.

Questions HVAC & Building Services engineers actually ask

Should I use ceramic fibre instead of glass wool for better performance?

Not below 250°C — and that covers essentially all of HVAC. Glass wool actually insulates better per millimetre in that range (0.035 vs 0.10+ W/m·K), absorbs sound far better, and costs a fraction as much. Buying ceramic fibre for a duct is a genuine and expensive mistake.

Why do I need a vapour barrier in cold service?

Because warm humid air drives moisture into the insulation toward the cold surface, where it condenses. Wet insulation does not insulate, and it will not dry out once it is behind cladding. A sealed barrier on the warm side is essential, not optional.

Which side does the vapour barrier go on?

The warm side — always. In a cold room, that is the outside (ambient) face, not the cold face. Seal every seam and penetration, because a barrier with gaps in it is not a barrier.

Why is my insulation not performing even though it looks fine?

Very often compression. It is the trapped still air, not the glass, that insulates. Insulation squashed at a joint, support or behind tight cladding has lost that air and is leaking heat and sound at exactly that point — while looking perfectly installed.

Does glass wool really work for acoustics too?

Yes, and it is one of its main advantages. Its open fibrous structure absorbs airborne sound as effectively as it resists heat transfer, which is why the same material lines ducts, plant rooms and acoustic partitions.

Is a pre-filter really worth it?

It is the highest-return maintenance item in an air handling unit. The pre-filter is cheap; the fine filter behind it is expensive. Changing the cheap one on schedule extends the expensive one dramatically and keeps fan energy down.
