PharmaceuticalSealing Where the Grade Is a Compliance Decision
In pharmaceutical manufacturing, a material choice is a compliance decision as much as an engineering one. We are precise about grade — FDA-compliant PTFE, platinum-cured silicone — because the wrong one is an audit failure, and the two look identical.
Industry Overview
Operating conditions & why material choice matters
In pharmaceutical manufacturing the relevant question about a sealing material is not only “will it seal” but “what could migrate out of it into the product”. Materials in product-contact zones typically need to meet FDA, USP Class VI or 3-A standards, and using a non-compliant material — even briefly — can compromise a batch or an audit.
The single most important discipline here is grade certification. Standard industrial PTFE and FDA-compliant PTFE are the same polymer and look identical; only one carries the documentation you need for an audit. The same applies to silicone. Specifying “PTFE” or “silicone” without saying which grade is how the wrong material ends up on a product-contact joint.
For high-purity work there is a further distinction that is not the default and must be asked for by name: platinum-cured silicone leaves far fewer reaction by-products than standard peroxide-cured silicone, giving a markedly cleaner extractables and leachables profile — which is precisely what quality teams and regulators scrutinise.
Common Engineering Challenges
What actually fails — and why

Wrong Grade on Product Contact
Standard and FDA-grade PTFE are indistinguishable by eye. Using the uncertified grade is an audit and contamination risk.

Peroxide-cured silicone leaves more reaction by-products. Platinum-cured is the clean-profile grade — and it is not the default.
Read the guideSeals Degrading Under CIP/SIP
Repeated hot caustic and acid sterilisation cycles break down ordinary materials — creating a harbourage risk before visible failure.

A rigid cut gasket can crack a glass lining or fail to seal an uneven face. A conformable sealant is the answer.

Product-contact gaskets, seals & liners
PTFE Sheets
FDA-compliant virgin PTFE sheet — chemically inert, non-porous, non-contaminating. Specify the food/FDA grade explicitly; standard industrial PTFE looks identical but is not certified.
Machined product-contact components
PTFE Rods
Virgin PTFE rod machined into valve seats, bushes, scraper blades and guides for direct product contact.
Hygienic pump & valve shaft sealing
Pure PTFE Gland Packing
Food/FDA-grade white PTFE packing that resists the full range of CIP/SIP chemicals without degrading or contaminating the product stream.
Flexible hygienic gaskets & seals
Silicone Rubber Sheet
For high-purity and product-contact duty, ask for platinum-cured by name — it gives the cleanest extractables profile and it is not the default grade.
Glass-lined vessels & irregular flanges
PTFE Joint Sealant
Expanded-PTFE cord that conforms in place to warped or glass-lined faces, where a rigid gasket would crack the lining.
Cleanroom & zone separation
Transparent PVC Curtain
Physical separation between controlled areas without a door to open and close. Specify stainless steel fittings for wash-down areas.

Customer Problem
City Pharma Limited required sealing materials compatible with hygienic production. In pharmaceutical manufacturing this is a compliance requirement rather than simply an engineering preference: a material in a product-contact zone has to be non-contaminating, cleanable, and documented — and using a non-compliant material, even briefly, can compromise a batch or an audit.
Technical Investigation
We reviewed the operating conditions and cleanliness requirements for the application. The decisive question in this environment is not just whether a material will seal, but what could migrate out of it into the product — and whether the grade being supplied carries the certification to prove it.
Root Cause
The requirement was to establish, up front, which certified grade the application actually needed. This is where hygienic sealing most often goes wrong: standard industrial PTFE and FDA-compliant PTFE are the same polymer and are visually indistinguishable, so specifying “PTFE” without stating the grade risks the wrong material reaching a product-contact joint.
Recommended Solution
We recommended FDA-compliant PTFE sealing materials — virgin PTFE sheet and PTFE rod — specified explicitly as certified grade rather than standard industrial stock. Virgin PTFE is chemically inert, non-porous and non-contaminating, will not taint product or introduce extractables, and tolerates the temperature range of repeated CIP and SIP sterilisation cycling without breaking down.
Installation Summary
Supplied as certified virgin PTFE sheet for gaskets and product-contact surfaces, and PTFE rod for machining into components. The practical discipline we advise alongside it is to keep certified and standard PTFE stock clearly separated and identified in stores — because once the two are mixed, they cannot be told apart by eye, and the wrong one will eventually be cut for a product-contact joint.
Operational Result
The selected materials met the required hygiene and performance criteria for the application.

Industry FAQ
Questions Pharmaceutical engineers actually ask
Is standard PTFE acceptable for pharmaceutical product contact?
No. Standard industrial PTFE and FDA-compliant PTFE are the same polymer and look identical, but only the certified grade carries the documentation you need for an audit. You must specify the compliant grade explicitly.
What is platinum-cured silicone and do I need it?
A different cure system that leaves far fewer reaction by-products, giving a much cleaner extractables and leachables profile. It is the grade for pharmaceutical and high-purity product contact. It is not the default, it looks identical to peroxide-cured silicone, and it costs more — so it must be asked for by name.
Can you supply compliance documentation?
Yes — food-grade and FDA documentation can be supplied on request. Tell us at the point of order that you need it for audit, so we supply from the correct certified stock.
Will PTFE survive our CIP/SIP cycles?
Yes. PTFE is chemically inert across the full pH range and comfortably tolerates the temperature range of standard CIP and SIP cycling — which is exactly why it is specified for hygienic product-contact sealing.
How often should product-contact seals be replaced?
On a fixed schedule tied to your CIP/SIP cycle count, rather than waiting for visible wear. By the time degradation is visible, cleaning chemicals may already have begun attacking the seal and it can become a harbourage point.
What seals a glass-lined reactor flange?
PTFE joint sealant — an expanded-PTFE cord that conforms in place. A rigid cut gasket risks cracking the glass lining or failing to seal an uneven face.
