Operating conditions & why material choice matters
Food and beverage processing places two demands on a sealing material that pull against each other. It must be hygienic and non-contaminating in direct product contact, and it must survive frequent, aggressive clean-in-place cycles of hot caustic and acid wash. Materials that seal well but degrade under repeated CIP become a bacterial harbourage risk long before they visibly fail.
The single most important discipline in this industry is grade certification. Standard industrial PTFE and food-grade PTFE are the same polymer and look identical — but only one carries the FDA certification and documentation you need for an audit. The same is true of silicone: standard silicone and food-grade silicone are indistinguishable by eye. Specifying "PTFE" or "silicone" without saying food grade is how the wrong material ends up on a product-contact joint.
For pharmaceutical-adjacent or high-purity work, there is a further distinction: platinum-cured silicone leaves far fewer reaction by-products than the standard peroxide-cured grade, giving a much cleaner extractables profile. It is not the default, it costs more, and it must be asked for by name.

Customer Problem
Youngs (Pvt) Ltd experienced recurring leakage from a centrifugal transfer pump used to move food-grade liquids. The existing packing required frequent replacement, and the maintenance team wanted a solution that combined genuine chemical resistance with the hygiene requirements of food processing. Repeated changeouts on the same pump are a reliable signal that the material, not the maintenance, is the problem.
Technical Investigation
Our engineering team reviewed the actual operating conditions — the pumped media, operating temperature, shaft speed and hygiene requirements. The packing removed from the pump showed clear signs of wear, and it was not the most suitable material for continuous food-processing duty. In a food plant the packing has to do two jobs at once that pull against each other: seal reliably, and survive repeated aggressive clean-in-place cycles without degrading into a contamination risk.
Root Cause
The packing in service was not specified for continuous food-processing conditions. It was wearing under the duty and, just as importantly, it was not the right material class for a hygienic, product-contact application.
Recommended Solution
We recommended Virgin PTFE Gland Packing, on four specific grounds: excellent chemical resistance (PTFE is inert across the full pH 0–14 range, so it resists the CIP chemicals as well as the product); low friction, which reduces shaft wear and heat; non-contaminating material properties, so it will not taint the product stream; and a wide operating temperature range that comfortably covers the hot CIP cycles a food plant runs daily. Those four properties together are precisely why PTFE is the default for hygienic product-contact shaft sealing. PTFE thread seal tape was supplied alongside for the associated threaded connections.
Installation Summary
The maintenance team removed the existing packing, cleaned the stuffing box, and installed the recommended PTFE packing using the correct ring arrangement and compression procedure. Two details in that sequence matter more than they appear: cleaning the box removes the old, hardened debris that would otherwise prevent the new rings seating properly, and the compression procedure — taking the gland up gradually to a slight controlled drip rather than crushing it dry — is what stops a new packing being burned out in its first hours of service.
Operational Result
The new arrangement provided smoother pump operation with reduced leakage and consistent sealing performance. The maintenance team reported improved reliability, and a sealing material better suited to food-processing requirements.

Questions Food Processing engineers actually ask
Is standard PTFE OK for food contact?
No. Standard industrial PTFE and food/FDA-grade PTFE are the same polymer and look identical, but only the certified grade carries the documentation you need for an audit. You must specify food grade explicitly.
What is platinum-cured silicone and do I need it?
A different cure system that leaves far fewer reaction by-products, giving a much cleaner extractables profile. It is the grade for pharmaceutical and high-purity product contact. It is not the default, it looks identical to standard silicone, and it must be asked for by name.
Can I use silicone on an oil line in the plant?
No — this is a common and costly mistake. Silicone has poor oil resistance and will swell and degrade. NBR (nitrile) is the correct material for oil, and it costs less.
How often should product-contact seals be replaced?
On a fixed schedule tied to your CIP cycle count, rather than waiting for visible wear. By the time degradation is visible, cleaning chemicals have often already begun attacking the seal and it may be a harbourage point.
Can I use standard PVC curtain on a freezer door?
No. Standard clear PVC stiffens and cracks below about −10°C. Freezer (polar) grade is a different formulation that stays flexible to around −25°C. They look identical — you must specify.
How do I stop dough and cheese sticking to my belts?
PTFE-coated fibreglass belting — nothing adheres to it even at oven temperature. Specify the food-grade coating for product contact. If your process needs air to pass through the belt, use the open-mesh version.
