Operating conditions & why material choice matters
Paper mills pair wet, fibrous stock handling with high-pressure steam in one facility — two very different sealing environments that are easy to under-specify if a plant standardises on one packing grade for simplicity.
On the stock side, pulp carries fibre, filler and grit, and the mixture is quietly abrasive on any shaft seal. Stock pumps, pulpers and refiners fitted with ordinary packing wear out faster than the maintenance manual predicts, and the cause is almost always abrasion rather than chemistry — the media itself is fairly benign.
On the steam side, the problem flips entirely to heat, and graphite packing is the answer. Filtration is the third axis: stock thickening and washing have different consistencies and fibre characteristics, and a single generic filter cloth spec will underperform at one stage or the other.

Customer Problem
Chemical transfer pumps at Empire Paper Mills, Sheikhupura required frequent packing replacement. Repeated changeouts on the same pumps are a reliable signal that something is wrong with the material selection rather than the maintenance — a correctly specified packing should not need replacing on that cycle.
Technical Investigation
We reviewed the actual operating conditions on those pumps and concluded that the packing in service was not suited to the application. A paper mill is really two sealing environments in one plant — abrasive stock on one side, chemistry on the other — and the packing that works on stock pumps is not the packing that survives chemical transfer duty. The failure here was a chemical one, not a wear one.
Root Cause
The existing packing was not chemically compatible with the media the pumps were transferring. On a chemical line the media itself is usually what destroys the seal, and no amount of correct installation will save a material that the fluid is attacking.
Recommended Solution
We recommended PTFE gland packing for its chemical resistance. PTFE is chemically inert across the full pH 0–14 range, which means it resists essentially the entire spread of chemicals a mill’s transfer pumps are likely to handle — and it will not degrade the way a chemically-unsuitable packing does.
Installation Summary
Fitted using the standard discipline that governs any gland: rings cut squarely on a mandrel and fitted individually rather than wound in, ring joints staggered so no straight leak path runs through the set, and the gland taken up gradually to a slight controlled drip rather than crushed dry.
Operational Result
Pump sealing reliability improved and leakage was reduced — and, critically, the repeated changeout cycle that prompted the enquiry was broken.

Why does my pulper packing wear out faster than the manual predicts?
Almost always fibre and grit in the stock attacking a packing grade not built for abrasion. The media itself is chemically benign — it is a mechanical wear problem, and aramid packing addresses it directly.
Can one filter cloth cover both thickening and washing?
Usually not optimally. Each stage has a different consistency and fibre characteristic, and a single generic weave will tend to blind on one and pass fines on the other. Match the cloth to the stage.
Should I use the same packing on the steam side?
No. Aramid is chosen for abrasion and tops out around 250–260°C. The steam side needs graphite packing, which is rated to ~450°C on rotating equipment. They solve different problems.
What insulation do I need for steam lines and dryers?
Glass wool for anything below 250°C, which covers most steam distribution and dryer-section pipework. It is cheaper than ceramic fibre, insulates better in that range, and damps machine-hall noise as a bonus.
Why is my new packing leaking straight away?
Common causes are over-tightening (which burns the packing and scores the shaft), a worn or scored shaft, ring joints not staggered, or spiral-winding a continuous length instead of fitting individual cut rings.
Is aramid packing worth the extra cost?
On genuinely abrasive stock duty, yes — the service-life difference is typically months versus weeks, and each unplanned repack on a stock pump costs far more in downtime than the packing does.
