Operating conditions & why material choice matters
A sugar mill is really two sealing problems in one plant, and the most common and costly error is treating them as one. On the process side, cane juice, mud and massecuite carry fibre, sand and grit, and they are relentlessly abrasive — the failure mode is mechanical wear. On the boiler and steam side, the challenge is heat, and the failure mode is thermal. Materials that excel at one are actively wrong for the other.
Standardising on a single packing across the mill to simplify stores feels sensible and reliably costs money. Aramid packing on a boiler-feed pump will fail on temperature; graphite packing on an abrasive juice pump wears out. Matching the material to the actual failure mode on each line is the single most useful thing to get right.
The other pressure is timing. During the campaign, every gland repack is production lost at exactly the moment the mill cannot afford it. The economic case for a better packing is not the price per metre — it is the changeout frequency and the downtime avoided.

Abrasive juice, mud & massecuite pumps
Aramid Gland Packing
Built for abrasion, not heat. Its ~250–260°C ceiling covers juice and mud service comfortably. Check shaft hardness — aramid is hard and will wear a soft shaft.
Boiler-feed & steam service
Graphite Gland Packing
Rated ~450°C on rotating equipment and higher on valves, with excellent self-lubrication. This is the boiler-side answer — not aramid.
High-pressure & superheated steam valves
Graphite Packing With Inconel Wire
Inconel wire reinforcement resists extrusion at valve pressures ordinary packing cannot hold. For valve stems, not rotating pumps.

Customer Problem
Steam valves in the boiler house at Noon Sugar Mills, Bhalwal required frequent maintenance because the existing gland packing was degrading under operating conditions. In a sugar mill this is more than an inconvenience: every gland repack during the crushing season is production lost at precisely the point in the year when the mill cannot afford to stop.
Technical Investigation
The packing removed from the valves showed hardening and wear — the signature of a material being run beyond its temperature capability. Packing that hardens has lost the resilience it needs to seal; once it stiffens it can no longer conform to the stem, and leakage follows quickly regardless of how the gland is tightened.
Root Cause
The packing in service was not rated for the temperature of the steam duty it was sealing. This is the single most common sealing error we see in sugar mills, and it usually comes from standardising on one packing grade across the whole plant — a packing chosen for the abrasive juice and mud side will not survive the boiler house, because those are two completely different problems.
Recommended Solution
We recommended high-temperature graphite gland packing for the steam valves. Graphite is self-lubricating and rated far higher than the packings used on the mill’s process side, so it does not harden and fail at steam temperatures. We supplied it together with proper installation procedures — because on a gland, the technique matters as much as the material.
Installation Summary
Correct installation was a specific part of what we supplied, and it is worth spelling out why. Rings must be cut squarely on a mandrel and fitted individually — never wound in as a continuous length — with each ring joint staggered from the one below it, so there is no straight leak path through the set. The gland is tightened only lightly and taken up gradually, and a slight controlled drip is correct: a bone-dry gland is over-tightened, and it burns the packing and scores the stem. Most “bad packing” is actually bad installation.
Operational Result
Steam leakage was reduced and maintenance intervals became more predictable — which, during a crushing campaign, is the outcome that actually matters.

What packing should I use on juice and mud pumps?
Aramid gland packing. The problem on those lines is abrasion from fibre and sand, and aramid resists it far better than cotton, jute or acrylic. Service life typically moves from weeks to months, which matters enormously mid-campaign.
Can I use the same packing across the whole mill?
No — and trying to is the most common costly mistake in a sugar mill. The abrasive process side needs aramid; the boiler and steam side needs graphite. Each is the wrong material for the other’s duty.
Why does my boiler-feed packing keep failing?
If you have fitted the same packing you use on the juice pumps, that is almost certainly why. Aramid tops out around 250–260°C and will not survive steam service. Graphite packing is rated to ~450°C on rotating equipment.
My gland is bone dry — is that good?
No, it is over-tightened. A correctly installed gland should show a slight, controlled drip, which lubricates and cools the packing. A dry gland is burning the packing and scoring the shaft.
Why is my new packing failing quickly?
The usual causes are over-tightening, a scored or worn shaft, ring joints not staggered (which leaves a straight leak path), or spiral-winding a continuous length instead of fitting individual cut rings.
What insulation do I need for steam lines?
Glass wool for anything below 250°C, which covers most steam distribution and juice heaters. It insulates better than ceramic fibre in that range and costs far less. Reserve ceramic fibre for the boiler itself.
