Operating conditions & why material choice matters
Power generation is where sealing materials are pushed hardest. Main steam, reheat and feedwater systems run at temperatures and pressures that destroy conventional packing outright, and a leaking valve stem on a superheated line is simultaneously an energy loss, a maintenance headache and a genuine safety hazard.
The plant also spans an unusually wide temperature range, and the economic play is to insulate each part with the right material rather than defaulting to the expensive one everywhere. Below 250 °C — feedwater, condensate, general ducting, plant-room acoustics — glass wool is both cheaper and genuinely better. Above 600 °C, only ceramic fibre survives. Getting that split right across the plant is worth real money.
Two specifics matter more in a power station than almost anywhere else. First, boiler gauge glass needs a mica shield: hot water chemically leaches the glass, and a gauge fitted without one goes cloudy, then weak, and can fail under pressure. Second, most flange gasket leaks are not gasket failures at all — they are bolt-sequence failures. Both are covered below.

Superheated steam & HP valve stems
Graphite Packing With Inconel Wire
Steam service to ~650°C and valve pressures to ~550 bar. The Inconel wire stops the soft graphite extruding out of the gland. Includes a corrosion inhibitor to protect the stem.

Customer Problem
Damaged insulation on steam pipelines at Sahiwal Coal Power Plant had raised pipe surface temperatures and increased energy losses. Hot, under-insulated steam lines are a double cost in a power station: the heat itself is lost energy, and the exposed hot surfaces are a burn hazard for anyone working around them.
Technical Investigation
Inspection found sections of insulation that were compressed and moisture-affected — and those two findings are the classic pair. It is the trapped still air in insulation, not the material itself, that does most of the insulating, so compressed insulation has already lost most of its value even while it still looks correctly installed. Moisture makes it worse: wet insulation insulates very poorly and, once it is behind cladding, it does not dry out and recover on its own.
Root Cause
The insulation had been physically degraded — crushed at supports and joints, and compromised by moisture ingress — rather than having failed thermally. Its condition, not its specification, was the problem.
Recommended Solution
We supplied ceramic fibre blanket to replace the degraded sections, with glass fibre cloth as cladding and finishing. Ceramic fibre was specified because steam-line surface temperatures on the turbine side sit above the range where a conventional insulation would survive; glass cloth provides a tough, non-combustible outer skin over the blanket.
Installation Summary
The work was carried out during the plant’s scheduled maintenance outage, which is the only realistic window for steam-line work in a power station. The important detail on refit is not to repeat the original failure: insulation must be fitted without compressing it at supports and joints, and the cladding sealed so that moisture cannot get back into the new material.
Operational Result
The insulation system was restored during the scheduled outage, bringing pipe surface temperatures and the associated heat losses back under control.

What packing do I need for superheated steam valves?
Graphite packing reinforced with Inconel wire. It handles steam to around 650°C and valve pressures to roughly 550 bar — the wire is what stops the soft graphite extruding out through the gland clearance.
Why does my boiler gauge glass keep going cloudy?
Chemical attack. Hot water and steam leach and etch the glass surface. A cloudy gauge glass is not cosmetic — it is progressively weakening. Fit a mica shield, which takes the attack instead of the glass, and replace glass, gaskets and mica together.
The gauge glass is rated to 400°C. Can I run it at 400°C?
Not in steam. That figure is for benign service. In steam and hot water the practical limit is around 245°C because of chemical attack on the glass. This catches people out, and it matters on a pressurised vessel.
Why do my flange gaskets keep leaking?
Usually the bolts, not the gasket. Tightening in a circular sequence pinches the flange and crushes the gasket unevenly. Use a star pattern in stages (30% / 60% / 100%) and re-check after the first heat cycle.
Can I use standard graphite packing on high-pressure valves?
Up to a point. For genuinely high-pressure valve stems, the Inconel-reinforced grade is what buys you the extrusion resistance. Standard graphite is the right choice for rotating pump shafts.
Where can I use glass wool instead of ceramic fibre?
Anywhere below 250°C — feedwater, condensate, general ducting, tanks, plant-room acoustic treatment. It is cheaper and actually insulates better in that range. Only go to ceramic fibre where the temperature genuinely demands it.
